Advice visits to Sydney by Simone

So here are some touristy things you have to do while in Sydney:

  • Visit Circular Quay and walk along the shoreline past the Opera House and through the Botanic Gardens.  If the weather is nice, take a picnic and enjoy beautiful views of the Harbour!

  • Walk through the Rocks (the oldest part of Sydney) where there are cute restaurants and bars.  On the weekends there are markets here too.
  • Visit Darling Harbour, perhaps in the evening.  There are lots more nice restaurants and bars here, and it is right on the water too.  You can go for a walk around the Harbour to the Star City Casino and take a drink at the rooftop bar.  Very lovely views of the sunset from there!
  • You must visit Bondi, only because it is Sydney's most famous beach!  It is very beautiful, but very touristy and busy too.  You can take a bus from the city or a train/bus.

  • Take the train to Katoomba and visit the Blue Mountains.  This area is all National Park and there are many bushwalks you can take that will show you beautiful scenery, including waterfalls and hopefully some animals!  I took some French friends of mine here and we camped for 2 days and did lots of bushwalking - it was wonderful and they had a great time!

  • Definitely take the ferry to Manly Beach - it takes 30minutes and goes right under the Harbour Bridge and past the Opera House.  You will arrive in Manly Beach, which is beautiful!  Walk through the Corso (the main street) to the beach, have fish and chips on the beach and admire the surf lifesavers and sunbathers.

  • From Manly beach, turn right and along the beach and follow the path around the headland to Shelley Beach.  This is a small, pretty beach which has small waves and is safe for swimming if you are not very confident in big waves.

  • Palm Beach is very, very beautiful, but it takes a long time on the bus!  From Sydney centre it will take approximately 1.5hrs, but you pass through some very nice areas of Sydney and the bus takes a road along the coast so that you have nice views of many beaches.  When you arrive at Palm Beach you can climb the headland to the lighthouse at the top and there is an amazing view of the entire coastline.  In this picture there is Palm Beach in the foreground and the beaches on the left hand side, with Sydney centre visible in the distance.

  • If you have time, you should stop on the way back at a pub called The Newport Arms, located in Newport.  It is only about 15 minutes on the bus from Palm Beach.  It is a big beer garden where you can buy pints of Australian beer, some frites and sit at tables overlooking the water and bush.  It is exquisite!  I will definitely join you there for a beer!

Thank you very much Simone for your advice ;) See you soon in Sydney!
